Machu Picchu

Here is an overview picture of Machu Picchu. One side of the city consisted of a bunch of stepped terraces on which they grew food. On the other side was the living quarters, markets, and temples. In between they had a series of fountains. In the background you can see the smaller peak, 'Huanu Picchu'. I actually climbed to the top of that peak!

Here is a restored hut. The Peruvian government has put the roofs back on a number of the buildings to show people what it was really like.

This is a picture of the temple of the sun, as seen through the window of what was probably the high priest's house.

Some people say that Machu Picchu was built by aliens because there is no way that the people could have made the stones fit together so well. Here is some of the best stonework in the city. Our guide explained that they only had nice stones for very special temples, and that the rabble just got rough rocks. He said that it was reasonable for the Inca to spend extra time to make nice temples.

Here is a picture from the terraced fields.

Here is the view from the inside of a hut. This is what some Inca saw every morning when he walked out his front door. It is nicer than the view from my front door.

Here is another overview picture.

And another.

And another. I could go all day. I took over a hundred pictures at the ruins.
