Chris Goes to Limoux

Besides being important because they invented sparkling wine (called Blanquette), Limoux was also a center of Catharism. Once in Limoux the local Catholic bishop came to try to convince people to give up Catharism. The Cathars wrote all of his arguments on a piece of paper and then said, "We'll throw this paper into a fire. If it burns, then you are right and we'll give up Catharism. If it doesn't burn, then we must be right and you can take a hike." They threw the paper into a fire, but it didn't burn, so they kicked the bishop out of town. I bet it was rigged.

This is St. Martin's Church. The entranceway and columns are Romanesque, but the nave and ambulatory are Gothic. It takes so long to built these things that major architectural movements occur between start and finish!

A baguette carrier in Limoux. We were the only ones in Limoux without baguettes to carry.

The main square in Limoux. It was a nice place to sit and have some coffee in the morning.
